HORSE-SICKNESS REACHES EPIDEMIC PROPORTIONS

Horse-sickness has reached epidemic proportions in Gauteng,  Kwazulu, E Cape. Movement restrictions to and from the Cape Province are again in force. Owners are advised to use  insect repellants even in vaccinated horses. Please see attached notification  from  the  Department of Agriculture.

The Western Cape Agriculture Department has imposed an embargo on the
movement of horses into the province. This follows an outbreak of African
horse sickness (AHS) in Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal and the Eastern Cape.

Spokesperson for the provincial Agriculture Ministry, Alie van Jaarsveld,
says the decision was taken to protect horses currently in the Export Zone.
He says more R200 million [25 417 172.70 USD] was lost a few years ago due
to a ban placed on imports by the European Union.

Information about Strangles

Things to note about the article

1. Although one often hears " mortalities are low, so don't worry - anyway it is not notifiable" this article says that about 8% of infected horses die from  strangles  but about 40% are euthanized because of complications.  For comparison - during a severe horse-sickness outbreak about 5-10% of horses die.  So strangles is NOT an  unimportant disease in a stud.

2. They mention that the vaccine is effective for only about 6 months

3. They also mention that horses can become reinfected from their own environment -  so just because a horse is treated and recovers, it does not mean they will not get it again. They also describe the carrier state.

4. The length of time it remains in the environment and quarantine of paddocks should be noted.

5. Water sources (like communal drinking troughs) are a source of infection.

6. There are guidelines on treatment and biosecurity.

I do not feel people should become neurotic about the disease - just  be careful and act quickly to quarantine and treat any of their horses that show symptoms before it spreads further,  if it breaks out in a stud.
